SEO and the Dublin Core metadata initiative

Since the advent of modern web searches, web hosts and individuals have been trying to leverage their sites higher in search results with metadata. Metadata is information not directly placed in the visible content of your site. Instead, it provides additional summary information about your data. Web site owners typically use only a handful of metadata tags or categories in their pages and blog posts. Commonly used metadata tags include the title, keywords, and description. However, use of metadata is sometimes sparse or non-existent.

The Dublin Core metadata initiative seeks to implement a standard set of 15 metadata tags. After reading Google’s literature on metadata and search protocol references, the idea of standardizing and providing a standard set of user data would appear to help rank you a bit higher in the ranks. In addition, metadata also provides valuable links and information to researchers and ordinary people about your site and references.

This .txt file is a list of the basic Dublin Core metadata initiative meta tag set that I used on one of my sites called OlyLinks.

I believe that standardizing sites with the Dublin Core tags would be a great help to increase search engine optimization and standardization amongst web sites. However, the casual blogger and web site owner typically would not go to such lengths to ensure that meta information are available. We have a long way to go for standardization…
